Conservation genomics of the Endangered North Atlantic right whale

Roxanne Gillett

I am the lead recovery biologist for North Atlantic right whales in the Species at Risk Program at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography with Fisheries and Oceans Canada. My work focuses on developing, amending, and facilitating implementation of the recovery strategy and action plan for this species under the Species at Risk Act (SARA).

I have a strong interest in understanding and taking into consideration the best available science to identify and address conservation issues for this species. Prior to joining Fisheries and Oceans Canada, I conducted research on the health and reproduction of North Atlantic right whales using genetic methods.

As part of the Conservation Genomics of the Endangered North Atlantic Right Whale project, I will help identify how the project can support the species’ recovery goals under SARA. I am looking forward to using the results of this research to inform and prioritize the implementation of recovery measures for North Atlantic right whales in Canadian waters.
